What Happened When I Meditated Every Day For A Year
I saved 8 hours from every working week. Find out how...
I spent one year doing something most ADHDers claim they can’t do — meditation. Why would I do something so excruciating? I’ll explain. But first, let me answer a few myths:
1. People with ADHD can’t meditate.
Untrue.
Meditation is available to all. However, some techniques are inaccessible. If you’re trying to stop thoughts, focus maniacally, or sit still for 10 hours. Forget about it.
2. Meditation is HARD
It shouldn’t be.
If you’re finding it hard, you’ve been taught wrong.
Meditation should be calming, peaceful, and restful. It’s not about stopping thoughts, sitting still for 10 hours, or focusing like crazy.
3. “My mind is too busy to meditate”
False.
Meditation is not about stopping thoughts. It’s allowing thoughts to fall away on their own over time. If you leave thoughts alone, at some point they’ll leave you alone.
This subtle shift will change your belief that your mind is too busy.
Also, in the ADHD-friendly meditation technique I teach, we use a special mantra that eases the busyness of your mind.
So to the people who think meditation is excruciating. I get it. The way you’ve been taught, even with apps like Headspace and Calm, can be excruciating.
But it doesn’t have to be.
Meditation can be easy.
Which is wonderful. Because meditation might be the most important thing I’ve ever done to manage my ADHD without meds.
Here’s why I meditated everyday for one year:
To prove it can be done.
But what I found surprised me.
I used to wake up and follow a laundry list morning routine:
Journaling
Gratitude practice
Cold shower
Exercise
A morning walk
Breathing techniques
And more
It’d take two hours to start my day.
Then I started this experiment — to meditate every day.
Within two months the rest of my morning routine fell away (aside from cold showers).
I didn’t need it anymore.
The meditation (and some light Breathwork) was all I needed.
Reducing my morning routine time by 83%.
That’s a full 8 hour workday of time saved per week!
THIS is why I’m so positive about meditation.
