You can hack your brain to produce dopamine without drugs.
Why it matters: it was believed that dopamine, the motivation hormone, is only activated in two ways:
Involuntary — when you’re motivated to do something you love
With drugs — caffeine, cocaine, ADHD meds
This belief is now disproven. Multiple studies show that you can hack your brain to produce dopamine with cold exposure and intense breathwork.
Go deeper: Andrew Huberman stated that dopamine levels can rise as much as 250% through cold exposure.
This is equivalent to the boost you’d get from a line of coke.
Huberman also shows that cold exposure triggers a surge of epinephrine and norepinephrine, heightening alertness. Amazingly, these elevated levels persist, enhancing energy and focus for many hours — without the crash you get from drugs.
My own experience: I’ve taken cold showers since 2017. And ice baths since 2021. I recommend them to every person seeking the Drug Free ADHD Method.
Cold exposure:
Has replaced my need for caffeine in the morning
Elevates my mood (more than anything else I’ve tried)
Helps me focus
But most of all, cold exposure has built within me a grit and determination that I didn’t know I had.
Here’s why: If you wake up at 6am on a freezing January morning and walk to the bathroom, you REALLY do not want to take a cold shower. But you do it anyway. Once you do it, everything else you face that day will feel less severe.
You’re learning to handle whatever life throws at you.
In truth, that’s the purpose of my life — to handle anything life throws at me.
We can try to get everything we ever wanted. To avoid everything we don’t want. But when does that ever happen, for anybody?
Handling reality is much more prudent.
Cold exposure, and boosting dopamine naturally, is your perfect first step to handling life.
